Hawks suspend Hodge for missing training

AFL: Hawthorn star Luke Hodge will miss the round one blockbuster with Essendon after being sanctioned by the leadership group.

Hodge was handed a one-match suspension after failing to adequately inform the club of his absence from training earlier in the week.

"Luke understands that he did not meet the standards of Hawthorn on this occasion," Hawks GM of football operations Jason Burt said.

"Unfortunately there was a breakdown of communication on Luke's behalf that led to a misunderstanding of his training expectations.

"The sanction is reflective of the standards and values of our club of which Luke has played a large role in creating and driving."

The news comes after Hodge handed over the club captaincy to Jarryd Roughead for the 2017 season.

Hodge told the club website he was disappointed in his actions and accepts the leadership group's decision.

"I have prided myself on holding the playing group to very high standards and I am disappointed that I let them slip on this occasion," the former captain said.

"Our club has established incredibly strong values and I fully support Rough and the leadership group in their decision and ensuring these values are upheld."

Hodge was fined $5000 by the leadership group in September 2015 after being pulled over by police while driving and recording a blood-alcohol reading of 0.068.

He was fined $450 and docked 10 demerit points on that occasion, with coach Alastair Clarkson admitting at the time he may have received a stronger penalty had he been a younger player with fewer credits in the bank.

"Quite possibly, because when 'Hodgey' was a second- or third-year player I threw everything at him because he missed a training session after a 21st (birthday party) and that was nearly the last time he had any trouble at our footy club," Clarkson said at the time.
