Helmet key to reducing head injury

AN ELDERLY male cyclist was lucky he was wearing his helmet when he collided with a small ute on Saturday.

The crash happened as the cyclist was exiting a car park on Old Maryborough Road after attending Hervey Bay State High School’s swap meet.

The car was entering the car park when the two collided.

The man received several cuts when he fell off the bike.

He was taken by ambulance to Hervey Bay Hospital but the situation could have been a lot more severe if he had not been wearing a helmet, police said.

“The helmet could have made a big difference,” Sergeant Peter Bennet said.

“It’s never good when the head hits a hard surface.

“Fortunately it was a low-speed accident.

“It’s very lucky that it wasn’t more serious.”

Police are still investigating the crash which happened about 11.40am.

There were minor traffic disruptions.
