Heritage City Reds out to boost growth
THEY'RE bright, they're bold and they're proud as punch of their motto 'growing old disgracefully'.
Restaurateurs of Maryborough you have been warned - the Heritage City Reds are coming for you.
In an effort to help boost the city's economy after the floods, the group has decided it will only meet for its social lunches in Maryborough.
Val Sampson, known to the reds as Queen Valerie of Travelot, said first cab off the rank this week was Bellygood.
"Half the girls had never been inside - they thought it was absolutely fabulous," she said.
Heritage City Reds is a social group that meets monthly for a chin-wag and a good old cackle - but numbers have been strictly limited to 20 to ensure a tight-knit circle.
Members must be over 55 and must wear a purple outfit and red hat to each social occasion.
Ms Sampson said while the group had supported local business in the past - everywhere from Hervey Bay to Apple Tree Creek - they had decided to meet exclusively in Maryborough from now on.
"So many businesses have closed down since the floods," she said.
"We want to support the locals. (Our first lunch) was absolutely hilarious.
"We are growing old disgracefully - we thought we better warn the restaurants that they may not be the same when we've left."
