Hervey Bay Hockey players begin the new season

HERVEY Bay Hockey Association has burst back into its new season.

The under-14 and reserve competition restarted on Friday afternoon, with other juniors and senior competition set to start on Saturday.

HBHA president Peter Harvey said it had been a busy few weeks for the association, but he was relieved to see the new season start.

Hervey Bay hosted the Over-60s Men's Masters Hockey carnival last week with great success, and there is a possibility it could return next year.

While that is great news for HBHA, the challenge according to Harvey is to boost participation numbers.

"It's probably gone down a little but I'd say we suffer from a similar thing most sports here do,” he said.

"We lose a significant number of young adults who can't find work or go to university.

"Our junior numbers are okay though.

"Everyone's pretty excited and we're looking forward to starting a new season.”
