Hervey Bay win glorious silver
A GROUP of Fraser Coast junior representative basketballers has every right to be feeling cock-a-hoop.
Well, they should be after the way they performed in the Academy Basketball Regional League Championship finals played in Toowoomba.
The Hervey Bay Basketball Association had three teams in action and they made a big impression in the annual event.
Two of the teams reached the grand finals in their respective age divisions while the other made the semi-finals.
The Hervey Bay under-14 boys' and under-16 girls' teams played their way into the finals, but had to settle for silver medals after Highfields (Toowoomba) won both showdowns.
In the boys' grand final, Highfields, who went through the titles undefeated, beat Hervey Bay 57-46 while in the girls showdown, Highfields defeated Hervey Bay 41-15.
Tenterfield ended the Hervey Bay under-18 boys' team campaign in the semi-finals after winning the game 39-35.
Neal Hillyard from the Hervey Bay Basketball Association said all three teams had performed well.
“It was the first time we had sent teams away to play in it and to perform as well as they did was a great effort,” he said.
“The competition was of a great standard, so to get three teams into the finals was fantastic.”
Although the Hervey Bay teams missed out on winning a title, Maryborough's Merri Burra Magic proved to be the hot shots in the under-16 boys division.
Maryborough won the title after beating Highfields 59-41 in the final.
Twenty-four teams from through south-east Queensland contested the titles.
