St Stephen's to have $1 million home for patients' families

HERVEY Bay's new St Stephen's Hospital will have a $1 million accommodation centre built near its Urraween site.

The facility has been made possible through a generous donation from a local family.

It will be built in two stages. The first stage, costing more than $500,000, will be seven motel-style units and a common outdoor area with family barbecue space, with building to begin in March 2014.

The second stage will see the development of eight more units. This will happen with further expansion of the hospital.

The centre will be named Christensen House and can be used by families and patients from outlying areas of the Fraser Coast, of which it's expected 40% of patients, will come from.

"Christensen House will provide short stay accommodation to patients and family members from these areas," St Stephens's general manager Leanne Tones said.

"The facility will also be used to provide accommodation for visiting medical practitioners.

"This will serve to attract visiting medical practitioners to the area thereby increasing the range of medical services available to our community."

The project steering committee hopes to raise more than $200,000 in donations or services from community groups and businesses to help with the fit out, furnishing and landscaping.
