STRONG enrolment figures have given Fraser Coast TAFE a boost, despite recent recommendations to downgrade the vocational service statewide.

Enrolment numbers at both the Maryborough and Hervey Bay site were looking promising, with the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE anticipating a bright start to the year.

The strong enrolment numbers come as a win for the education organisation, whose future was put in jeopardy last year after the state government's Skills and Training Taskforce report suggested the closure of several Queensland TAFE sites.

Department of Education Employment, Skills and Training Investment deputy director-general Jodi Schmidt said many new students had enrolled at the vocational education and training organisation, though applications were still open until January 29.

"The Wide Bay region continues to display a strong interest in health and community service studies," Ms Schmidt said.

"We've also had additional inquiries for this semester's nursing, aged care, business and children's services programs."

Ms Schmidt said early figures had indicated enrolment numbers surpassed last year's figures on the Fraser Coast.

"Hospitality and tourism continue to be popular at Fraser Coast campuses," she said.

"Traditional trades like fabrication, construction, electro technology, fitting and machining are also likely to perform well this year."

The positive figures come months after a report into the functionality of Queensland TAFEs suggested major changes should be made to support the future of the struggling education service.

Information released in the report recommended the closure of up to 25 sites across the state.
