High profile lawyer seeks preselection for seat of Sunnybank

A HIGH-PROFILE lawyer - who has defended disgraced LNP MP Scott Driscoll and former federal Speaker Peter Slipper - is among the latest round of preselections as Labor candidates for the next Queensland election.

Peter Russo will run for the ALP in Sunnybank against LNP member Mark Stewart while a surgeon, police officer and nurse were pre-selected in other Brisbane seats.

Mr Russo also defended Gold Coast doctor Mohamed Haneef when he was detained as a terror suspect without charge. He later awarded compensation following the political controversy.

State Labor party president Dick Williams said Queenslanders would now have the opportunity to place candidates under the microscope.

He said Queensland's electoral mood was shifting and he believed presenting the right mix of new faces and experience to the public would help keep the pendulum swinging towards Labor.

The LNP has repeatedly mocked previous pre-selection endorsements - such as the return of ousted Labor MPs - such as Cameron Dick, pre-selected in Woodridge, and Stirling Hinchliffe, running for Sandgate - during parliament.

"It's a team who can get Queensland back on track and relegate the arrogance, nepotism and cronyism that has characterised the Newman government as a sad chapter in our great state's history book," Mr Williams said.

"It's a team who can stop the LNP's planned asset sales because we all know that's what they're going to do.

"New faces like Nikki Boyd in Pine Rivers, Billy Gordon in Cook and Leanne Donaldson in Bundaberg will ensure Queenslanders will see a renewed and refreshed Labor party with a progressive agenda.

"We will also have experience in Annastacia Palazczuk's team and former MPs like Cameron Dick and Stirling Hinchliffe able to provide a steady hand and pragmatic approach."

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said the "new wave" of candidates announced on Tuesday would help deliver a fresh, experienced alternative at the next state election.

She said they were all upstanding members of the community who brought professional experience and acumen to the Labor team.

"They will join other candidates with strong professional backgrounds that have already been endorsed across the state, such as a paramedic in Thuringowa, a childcare worker in Mundingburra, a corrections officer in Caloundra and a town planner in Keppel," she said.

"I have no doubt they will campaign strongly in their electorates and take the fight up to the LNP army at the next election."
