Historic woodturning victory for woman at show

FOR the first time in 10 years, a woman has taken out the champion open woodturning exhibit at the Fraser Coast Show.

Brenda Walker's red cedar mosaic ornament, which took several weeks to put together, was the judges' pick out of more than 140 entries.

Ms Walker, president of the Maryborough Woodturners and Woodcraftsmen Guild, said she was the first woman to win the section in a decade and the first Maryborough woman to take the title.

"It won the artistic section too - the judges said they'd never seen anything like it," she said.

"It's a hollow form, made of bunya pine and covered in red cedar mosaics."
