Hoops history to be remembered at 50th anniversary

HISTORY that dates back to when basketball players rocked the thigh-high shorts and thick white socks will be remembered when Maryborough Basketball celebrates 50 years later this year.

The association will celebrate over two days starting with a come and try day and social games on Saturday, October 5 and an anniversary dinner at Carriers Arms Hotel on Sunday, October 6.

There will also be other activities and games held during the weekend for everyone to enjoy.

Maryborough Basketball first operated out of the exhibition hall in the old showgrounds on Alice St before moving to its current home on Ariadne St in 1965 with two outdoor courts.

In 1975 the association built its stadium, known as K.M Pearson Basketball Stadium, and have since made some major upgrades to its outdoor courts.

The sport still remains strong with 55 teams in the association's senior and junior competitions.

As part of its celebrations, Maryborough Basketball would like to hear from past payers who may have any old photos or newspaper clippings they could display during the 50-year anniversary weekend.

Former players are also encouraged to get the word out for old teams to get together for the weekend.
