Hope for the right decision on Tobruk: opinion

LET'S hope the Department of Defence makes the right decision by scuttling the ex-HMAS Tobruk in our region.

I don't see why the State Government announced that they will write to Queensland's coastal councils inviting expressed interest in bringing the ship to their part of the state.

It was the Fraser Coast and Bundaberg regions that pushed for it first, it was our leaders that put up the money to bring it here before anyone else and it makes the most sense when you look at the two cities' economies.

Despite some minor criticism surrounding the sinking of the Tobruk, it can only mean more much-needed dollars here.

Today's Page 2 story on the five potential sites for the Tobruk's final resting place addresses a few of the concerns, including water clarity and the depth.

With Tasmania announcing their withdrawal from the Tobruk bid it looks as though the Fraser Coast and Bundaberg councils are up against stiff competition by the likes of Gold Coast and Adelaide.

It has been over a year since the Fraser Coast Chronicle ran a story on the HMAS Tobruk advisory committee's hopes to scuttle the ship.

Let's hope in the coming weeks the region that wanted the Tobruk from the start gets the good news.
