Offers made for old St Stephen's Hospital in M'boro

A FIRM offer has been made from a buyer interested in purchasing Maryborough's St Stephen's Hospital, while another party has made an indicative offer.

But UnitingCare Health's chief strategy officer Terence Seymour said he was still unable to reveal the identity of the two potential buyers.

The private hospital closed its doors late last year after UnitingCare Health opened the new St Stephen's digital hospital in Hervey Bay.

Since then the hospital has been on the market and rumours about a potential buyer have abounded.

"There's still no contract," Mr Seymour said, adding that the UnitingCare Health board would be meeting to discuss both offers and to decide on a buyer.

He said the decision would rest largely on which offer would be in the community's best interest.

Speaking to the Chronicle last month, Mr Seymour said he was unable to say whether the building would remain a hospital or whether Wesley Medical Imaging and Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology Maryborough Collection Centre would continue to operate from the health centre.

In February last year, the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Friendly Society Chemists board indicated it was considering taking over the facility and maintaining it in its current state.

The Chronicle is continuing to attempt to contact members of the board to find out if the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Friendly Society Chemists is one of the two interested parties.

Maryborough's Peter Olds, who has advocated strongly for the hospital, on Wednesday said he wouldn't comment much because he understood the negotiations taking place were delicate.
