Howard war hero home in good spirits after foreign ordeal

AUSTRALIAN war hero Ken Crockford is now home and in good spirits after spending most of the past two months in foreign and Australian hospitals.

Lance Cpl Crockford spent about seven weeks in a German Hospital and nursing home after falling ill on a Rhine River cruise.

With generous assistance from the Queensland RSL the family spent more than $43,000 on Lance Cpl Crockford's medical costs as well as food and accommodation for his wife Lesley, who travelled with him.

After returning to Australia Lance Cpl Crockford, a Military Medal recipient was taken to St Stephens Hospital with pneumonia.

After recovering weeks later, Lance Cpl Crockford and Lesley have returned to their Howard home.

His son Wayne said the veteran was spending a lot of time in bed, but feeling good.

"I had a chat to him on Sunday and he sounds really good," Wayne said

"He's a tough old bird."
