Howard's century old footbridge to be torn down

BARBARA Trevaskis remembers racing over the Howard footbridge as a child, eager to cross before the smoke of a steam train would cover her in soot.

The century-old timber bridge will be torn down by Queensland Rail on Saturday, who have deemed it unsafe.

It will be a sad day for Ms Trevaskis, who has fond memories of the bridge.

"In the 60's we did live in Edith St and my brother and I used to walk over the bridge," she said.

"Back in the day when there where steam trains on the tracks."
