'Young, stupid' drunk fined for giving police officer a hug

A YOUNG reveller learnt the hard way that hugging a policewoman won't lead to a good night out.

Darcy William Taylor, 20, appeared in the Gladstone Magistrate's Court on Monday on two charges of assaulting or obstructing a police officer.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Sean Franklin told the court police were conducting foot patrols in the Gladstone CBD on October 21.

The court heard that at 2.30am, the defendant approached a female police officer and placed his arms around her waist from behind.

Taylor then walked away smirking and later resisted when police arrested him. He was transported to the watch house.

His lawyer Cassandra Ditchfield told the court her client was young, stupid and intoxicated.

"It wasn't the weapons on her belt he was interested in."

Taylor pleaded guilty and was fined $750.
