Husband's devotion moves Queensland Governor to tears

BEV Cornwell draws in a deep breath, firms her lips around a silver whistle and blows each time she needs something that requires her to move her body.

It's been like this every second of every day since 2007, when multiple sclerosis claimed all of her mobility.

Bev knows her husband Geoff is just a whistle away, and each time she blows he comes running. It's a special type of run too: it's one of devotion, of honour.

Geoff explains: "She said one day, 'Why don't you just buzz off and leave me, I don't want to be a bloody drag on you?'

"I said, 'Wait a minute, when we took our wedding vows I thought it was in sickness and in health, till death do us part and I just hope you would have done the same for me if things were reversed'.

"People ask if it's a chore and, yeah, it is, but it's just something you do.

"It's your loved one," Geoff said.

Geoff Cornwell was recently named MS Carer of the Year at a ceremony held at Government House, Brisbane.

As part of the selection process Bev had to put into words the reasons Geoff was her MS hero.

Queensland Governor and MS Queensland patron, Penelope Wensley, chose the Point Vernon man from 45 nominations.

Bev said the Governor commented that she had picked his nomination for one reason.

"She said the entries were all so detailed that each one nearly bought her to tears," Bev said.

"Geoff was the last of five people to be presented with an award. And she came across, gave him his, and turned to the audience, and said: 'And this was the one that made me cry'."
