Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Station Officer John Pappas said firefighters quickly located and extinguished the fire on the ground floor before removing smoke and ventilating the area.

"The early activation of the smoke alarm system greatly assisted firefighters with containing the fire to the area of origin,"  Officer John Pappas said.

Two crews from Torquay Fire Station attended.
