Rocky mum alerts police to son's stash of crystal meth

IT WAS Rodney Jeremy Darwin's mother who alerted police to his crystal methamphetamine stash.

The 45-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of possessing dangerous drugs in Rockhampton Magistrates Court last week after his mother called police at 1.25am on October 26.

Police prosecutor Manon Barwick told the court the informant alerted police to three clip-seal bags containing a white crystal substance inside a sharps container in a wheelie bin.

The court heard she handed police a fourth bag of crystal methamphetamine when they arrived.

Ms Barwick said the contents of the four bags weighed less than one gram.

"It was at my mother's place and my mother rang the police," Darwin said.

Magistrate Cameron Press told Darwin he "needed to get on top of the problem once and for all".

Darwin was sentenced to 12 months' probation.

Snr Sgt Ben Carroll, officer-in-charge at the North Rockhampton police station, urged the public to alert authorities to any suspicious activity related to the growing scourge of ice across the community.

"We're certainly noticing an increased prevalence in the use of ice," he said last week.

"Those who are using crystal meth think it's a more a socially acceptable way of using drugs than injecting."

He said the use of ice was spread across all demographics and the ice issue in Central Queensland was on par with the rest of the nation.
