Iconic pie shop still on market

AUGIE Sauer’s iconic pie shop in Maryborough is still a business opportunity waiting to be grasped after Saturday’s auction failed to attract a buyer.

Harcourts real estate agent Troy Rogers said owner Robyn Hopper, was yet to advise him if the property would be auctioned again.

The pie shop closed in June after trading for 91 years.

Ms Hopper, currently overseas, bought the shop from the Sauer family about 13 years ago and ran it until ill-health forced her to sell the business, but not the land or building, two and a half years ago.

“It ended up in the hands of a liquidator who has now handed it back to me,” Ms Hopper said before the auction.

“A new owner might want the business only or the building or the whole package.”

Almost all equipment needed to restart trading as a bakery – including the original wood fire oven and modern stove – is on site.

Sauer’s pies were legendary, not only in the Heritage City but also among people throughout Australia who had tasted the Aussie icon’s local version.
