Initial estimates for Toogoom seawall are $1.4-2.6 million

A $1.4 million to $2.6 million seawall to protect 16 houses at Toogoom from coastal erosion is a step closer to being built.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the council adopted a plan to allow it to build the wall and then set a special rate for property owners, who will be protected by the revetment wall, to pay back the funds.

"This is the most significant action council has been able to take to help residents," infrastructure planning portfolio councillor Trevor McDonald said.

"Coastal erosion is a very complex issue and until this policy was adopted, council could not do a lot to help.

"This will allow us to push ahead with plans to design and build the revetment wall to protect houses in Kingfisher Pde at Toogoom.

"And it will allow residents to band together to take action."

The policy applies to those properties identified under the Shoreline Erosion Management Plan within immediate threat and if the majority of residents in an affected area want action then the council will facilitate talks with the relevant state departments, help develop plans and oversee construction of the revetment wall.

"Residents will be able to pay council back for the works over time rather than having to fund what could be multimillion dollar projects up front," Cr McDonald said.

Initial estimates on the cost of building the 450m seawall at Toogoom range from $1.4 million to $2.6 million.

The final cost will be determined after detailed design and construction plans are developed.

To undertake the work, the council will have to amend the 2013-14 budget and seek additional loan borrowings and the special rate would start in the 2014-15 financial year.
