Inmate, 22, bashed to death at Maryborough prison

A MURDER charge is expected to be laid against a prisoner at the Maryborough Correctional Centre after an inmate was bashed to death in the prison's exercise yard.

Detectives are investigating the death of a 22-year-old prisoner who was assaulted inside the facility about 2.50pm on Tuesday.

The prison was placed into lockdown following the incident and remained that way for several hours after being declared a crime scene.

Head of the Maryborough District Police, Superintendent Mark Stiles, would not confirm whether a weapon was used in the attack.

He denied claims there had been a riot in the prison grounds in the lead-up to the death, and said no staff were under threat.

"There was no unrest," he said.

Supt Stiles said the Corrective Services Investigation Unit, which comprised of detectives from the State Crime Operations Command, was leading the investigation.

They had travelled from Brisbane to the prison, at Aldershot, late on Tuesday and remained in the region.

They were being assisted by local detectives, uniformed police and forensic services staff.

"We hope to have a resolution to the matter by the end of the week."

The prisoner's name has not been released, as police were still attempting to contact relatives.

They have confirmed his family members do not live locally.
