Inmate escapes prison, checks on baby, hands himself in

A TEEN who escaped from Don Dale in a desperate bid to find his baby handed himself into authorities after he found out the child was fine.

The 17-year-old boy climbed over the razor wire at Don Dale, outside Darwin in the Northern Territory, at 7.45pm last night after the child's mother, another Don Dale inmate, hinted the child was in trouble.

Superintendent Rob Burgoyne said the teenager was worried the baby was not being cared for.

"He's got a baby with another inmate of Don Dale who turned up yesterday and there was a bit of a worry about where the baby was," he said.

"On Sunday the female's mother rang us and said that she was worried about the baby and we managed to track the baby down and everything was OK.

"I suspect what's happened is he's spoken to his mother and found out the baby is fine and he's said, 'Well that's OK. I'll go back down to Don Dale then'."
