Housemate offered to 'get' child rapist

JOANNE Marie McCauley's housemate had offered to attack a man she believed was a child rapist, a coronial inquest has heard.

The Brisbane Coroner's Court is investigating the death of Mr Chan in August 2012.

Mr Chan was riding a bicycle along the Warrego Hwy when he was struck by a car.

He was left in a ditch on the side of the road and died of hypothermia.

The court has heard Gatton woman Joanne Marie McCauley bragged about running Mr Chan down - but she says she only said it to scare off a man she believed was a child rapist.

On Wednesday, Ms McCauley's former housemate, Jesse Colin Carloss, said he had offered to force the man away if she had wanted it.

Mr Carloss said he had told Ms McCauley: "If you want me to get this f**khead out of here, I'll do it".

But he said Ms McCauley did not take him up on the offer and claimed she was trading drugs with the man.

Mr Carloss admitted to have been regularly smoking marijuana, but said the drug had not hurt his memory of the incident.

In a police recording played to the court, Mr Carloss said Ms McCauley had offered to give him marijuana if he broke into where the man she believed was a child rapist was living and steal a recorder from him.

Mr Carloss said the man had taped Ms McCauley confessing to running Mr Chan over.

He told the court he took a different recorder from the man's house and smashed it in front of Ms McCauley, who thanked him for preventing her going to prison.

Although Mr Carloss admitted he had gone to jail over a fight with Ms McCauley's former partner, he denied having any ill will towards Ms McCauley and said he did not want to see her go to jail.

"I don't think she deserves to go to jail for the rest of her life," he said.

"She's a good person. She just can't stay off the drugs."
