Stopping traffic with her own taser gun

A woman has been fined for having a Taser stun gun, as well as drug and driving offences.

Sarah Jane Hunter, 28, of South Mackay, plead guilty to unlawfully possessing a category R weapon (a Taser), obstructing a police officer while intoxicated, both on July 18, 2016.

She also plead guilty to using an unregistered, uninsured vehicle, and possessing cannabis and a utensil on November 25, 2016.

The Police prosecutor, who we have not named for safety reasons, said police found Hunter obstructing traffic on Paradise St on July 18.

"She was escorted off the road, but continued to try to walk back out on the road."

Hunter was detained, but she refused to get into the police vehicle for 10-15 minutes. She later claimed she had been to a party and her drink had been spiked.

"Prior to her being placed in the police vehicle, a search uncovered a Taser in her pocket. Police later returned to the police station and tested the Taser, when they turned it on, it proceeded to spark and arc."

"She said (the Taser) was for self defence. She said she didn't know it was illegal..."

Chris Colwill, defending, said Hunter suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and recently spent two months in hospital.

Magistrate Damien Dwyer fined Hunter $450, and ordered her to perform 40 hours of community service, and attend a drug education session.

"Make sure you keep in contact with your doctors," he said.
