'It nearly cost them their lives': Rip snags swimmers

THE sun was shining, the waves were relatively small, but what lifeguards are calling "deceptive conditions" nearly cost two swimmers their lives.

A man and a woman, both 19, were swimming at Twin Waters beach, about 200m south of the flags, when they got into trouble in a rip.

Roving life guard Mark Jacobs said they had come "very close" to drowning.

"Luckily for them, an off-duty lifesaver was walking nearby and managed to send a member of the public to alert the lifeguards, and get the persons back to shore," he said.

The swimmers were both taken to Nambour General Hospital.

Mr Jacobs said the surf had been relatively small, at half-to-one metre up and down the coast, but open stretches of beach were still hazardous.

"There are large inshore holes and gutters up and down the coast, and on the incoming and outgoing tides, they're still causing decent rips," he said.

Mr Jacobs said that with warm, sunny conditions, plenty of people had been on the beaches, and various minor rescues had been carried out through the day.

"People tend to wander down the beach a few hundred metres instead of coming and swimming between the flags," he said.

Earlier in the day, lifesavers from Noosa assisted a woman who had slipped on rocks at Tea Tree Bay and had a suspected broken wrist.
