Fraser Island captures imagination of international artist

GERMAN artist Heide Smicke has travelled the world for 10 years, but it's Fraser Island that captured her imagination.

The island has influenced her latest exhibition, Playing Memory, which is now on show at the Hervey Bay Regional Art Gallery.

Ms Smicke is drawn to natural formations of erosion trails, blurred formations, drifts and light-catching surfaces - inspiring her collection of abstract liquid acrylic paintings and photographs, where the surface becomes the subject.

Cultural officer Vanida Petts said the works gave a new perspective on nature.
