Joey missing after mother shot in Eli Waters

A KANGAROO was shot and left for dead while its injured joey remains missing near Eli Waters in Hervey Bay.

The female kangaroo was discovered bleeding from a bullet hole through one of its hind legs less than 1km from residential areas at about 3.30pm on Wednesday.

A wildlife rescuer said she also had secondary injuries from being hit by a vehicle and a large amount of milk indicating she had a young joey.

The original witness on the scene reported seeing a joey with a badly fractured hind leg but the rescuer could not find the joey.

The rescuer also contacted local vets to see if someone had taken it to a surgery but there was not record of a joey being taken in.

The roo was humanely euthanised but concerns are held for the joey.

RSPCA inspector Penny Flaherty has asked anyone with information to phone the RSPCA hotline 1300 852 188.

"This is a very serious incident that has left these animals in extreme suffering but there are also other serious criminal offences committed in relation to firearms," she said.
