JOSH Thomas has revealed the mortifying question his mum asked him after she watched his critically acclaimed TV show, Please Like Me.

There were a number of heavy themes in the comedy/drama series which ended last year after four seasons, including depression, suicide and infidelity.

But as Josh Thomas told Meshel Laurie on her Nitty Gritty Committee podcast, his mum had one main question after watching the show and it had to do with a gay sex scene he filmed for the ABC show.

"There's this sex scene that's quite romantic," Thomas told Laurie.

"And she says to me, 'Josh, can I ask you something? You're not going to be very comfortable about it.'"

Thomas told his mum he'd rather she didn't ask him the question, but we all know what mum's are like.

"And she goes, 'Can boys do it frontways?' I said, 'Yeah, boys can do it frontways.' She goes, 'Oh, well that's a nicer way of doing it!'

"She just hadn't ever imagined gay sex and being gentle and nice," Thomas said. "I think that's the biggest thing that she took away from it [Please Like Me]."

Josh Thomas rose to fame as a stand-up comedian, debuting his first solo show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival a decade ago.

He quickly became a TV regular appearing on Good News Week, Celebrity Splash and Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation but has now turned his back on those types of shows.

"I stopped doing much variety television," he told Laurie, "I'm not going on I'm A Celebrity Get Me out Of Here ... I don't want to do that stuff. I do scripted stuff."

Now 30, Thomas is preparing to move to the US where he'll continue working on a new scripted show which is currently in development.

He's no stranger to Los Angeles where he's already spent some time mingling with Hollywood's heavyhitters.

"Once I went to Seth McFarlane's [house]," Thomas told Laurie.

"He has these big parties. He has a tennis court and he puts a tent over the top and he has a whole orchestra and then he mostly sings in front of the orchestra all night.

"Zac Efron was there and properly famous people. I'm there with my boyfriend [Thomas has been dating Josh Schmidt, for five years] who looks a bit like Dave Grohl.

"Marilyn Manson's there with Courtney Love and he taps Courtney and he goes, 'Oh my god, that's Dave Grohl.'"

Thomas' boyfriend overheard and was amused by the case of mistaken identity.

"He goes over to Marilyn Manson and says, 'Did you think I was Dave Grohl?' And then he laughed ... and they went off and then like 10 minutes later Josh walks back and his chinos are all ripped off. I said, 'What happened?' And he went, 'He wanted to rip my chinos.'"

One of Thomas' biggest fans in the US is, or perhaps was, Lena Dunham.

The Girls creator said she "freaked out" when she met Thomas and raved about his show, Please Like Me.

"It's truly amazing and the fact that it's not winning every Emmy in the world is insane because it's as great if not better than everything else that's on television," she toldNews Corpin January last year.

But as Thomas revealed on The Project, he kinda blew his chance at befriending the powerful US star.

"We were going to hang out a few times but she kept having to cancel to get surgery on her uterus," Thomas said about Dunham who suffers from endometriosis.

"I sent her an email saying, 'You know for such an outspoken feminist, you sure do blame a lot of things on your uterus.'

"She didn't reply. But that's a pretty funny joke, right? … Like it was clear that I was kidding, right?"

Awkward.
