Joyce abandons Maranoa plan

QUEENSLAND Senator Barnaby Joyce has withdrawn his bid to nominate for LNP preselection in the federal electorate of Maranoa, after incumbent Bruce Scott announced on Wednesday he would stand again.

Mr Scott has held the seat for 22 years, but Senator Joyce had earlier expressed an interest in running for preselection in a bid to move to the lower house.

But Senator Joyce said in a statement on Wednesday an internal campaign would be an unnecessary distraction leading up to the next federal election.

He will still be able to hold his Senate seat for another three years, as part of his six-year term in the upper house.

"For the purpose of unity in the Nationals and the LNP teams I endorse the Honourable Bruce Scott to be re-elected as the member for Maranoa and wish him all the best in his continued political career," Senator Joyce said.

"I would like to acknowledge and thank so many who have been so kind in the strong support they have offered."

Mr Scott said he was encouraged to stand again by senior colleagues, constituents and the business community.

"I'm absolutely committed to getting the best for the electorate and will do everything I can for a change in government in Canberra," Mr Scott said.

"As a previous minister in the Howard government and an experienced representative of rural and regional Australia, I am keen to make a significant contribution to an Abbott/Truss government restoring the confidence of Australians in the economic management and direction of our nation."
