America’s Cup decision due today

HERVEY Bay’s slim hopes of getting a shot at hosting the final of the America’s Cup yacht series will be known within the next 24 hours.

A New York Supreme Court justice is expected to make a ruling today on just where the final will be sailed ending a two-year court battle between the Swiss and American contenders.

The two powerhouses in world sailing haven’t been able to find a neutral venue and Queensland has been suggested as a possible alternative.

The Alinghi and BMW Oracle teams met in New York at the weekend to try to decide whether the best-of-three series would be sailed in Valencia, Spain, or on Australia’s east coast.

Should they decide on Queensland the Fraser Coast Regional Council has already forecast it is ready to go in boots and all for the rights.

If they are successful it will change the face of Hervey Bay forever.

Following yesterday’s article in the Chronicle a number of Fraser Coast community organisations have also come forward to offer their support to the project.
