Cracked rib after kangaroo knocks cyclist off bike

NURSING a cracked rib and severe gravel rash, cyclist Rusty Hall will need a lot of recovery time before getting back on the bike.

The 77-year-old was knocked off his bike when riding back to Rockhampton, but it wasn't a car that collided with him - it was a kangaroo.

Rusty had ridden from the Red Hill Centre in Rockhampton to the top of the Mount Morgan Range with a cycling group early on Sunday and was on his way back when he crashed about 7am.

He was just outside Bouldercombe, riding at around 35kmh, when a "flash of grey" hit him and knocked him to the ground.

His helmet was smashed in the process, but amazingly his bike sustained no damage, other than some kangaroo fur caught in the front wheel.

Rusty was riding a distance behind the pack when the accident happened.

Luckily for him a driver saw him on the road and picked him up before taking him to the Mount Morgan Hospital. He was then transferred to Rockhampton Hospital for x-rays.

"It's been a bit of a painful exercise," Rusty said.

"I didn't even see the kangaroo… the next thing I know there was a flash of grey in front of me and I'm on the ground."
