Katie has a new rank- wife
KATIE MacDonald is counting down the days until she is home again – and with good reason.
The 22-year-old Hervey Bay woman was married to a fellow soldier, Daniel, in early 2009 and the two have been apart for much of their married life so far – Katie has spent the past seven months in Afghanistan while Daniel has been on duty in East Timor.
This month they celebrated their first wedding anniversary – in two different countries.
Katie joined the army in March 2008 and has specialised in administration.
In Afghanistan she is a registry clerk, managing the flow of key documents.
Now an army Private, Katie has been deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation Slipper, Australia’s military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism.
“The people I have met and the places I have been to makes it an experience like no other so far,” Katie said.
“I have been surprised by the harshness of the weather and also surprised by the locals; they truly live in a third-world country, yet they remain so resilient.”
Although her experiences overseas have been enriching, Katie cannot wait to be home with her husband again soon – and is looking forward to finally going on her long-awaited honeymoon. “I’m really looking forward to my honeymoon in Hawaii in March,” she said.
She is also excited about seeing her parents again. Her dad is still in Hervey Bay while her mother is in Brisbane.
“I can’t wait to go fishing on Torquay Beach with my dad,” Katie said.
