Kerby powers to NZ stage win

REIGNING world individual pursuit champion Jordan Kerby intended to use the New Zealand Cycle Classic as endurance training for the upcoming Track National Championships and a possible Commonwealth Games campaign.

The Fraser Coast product will instead leave the Land of the Long White Cloud with a stage victory after a powerful sprint finish on the tour's final day.

The Brisbane Continental Cycling Team member and Xavier Catholic College alumnus beat JLT Condor duo Ian Bibby and Tom Stewart and New Zealand national team's Hayden McCormick over the line.

McCormick won the NZ Cycle Classic.

Kerby will return to Brisbane's Anna Meares Velodrome for the Track Nationals, where he will attempt to defend his individual pursuit crown.

It will also be an opportunity to use the Commonwealth Games venue before the Gold Coast event starts on April 4.
