King on the run: Harry takes out gold, silver in Junior Tri

TRIATHLON: AFTER dominating the first rounds of the Australian Junior Triathlon Series, Harry King has proven himself one of the fastest junior athletes around.

The 15-year-old Hervey Bay triathlete raced home with gold in Race 1 last Saturday and followed it up with a silver in the mixed teams relay on Sunday.

Both wins have put the young gun at the top of the leaderboard ahead of the final race in two months time.

The last race will be held between March 2-3 in Devonport, Tasmania.

King, who made the Queensland School Sports Triathlon team last year, said it was harder than his usual triathlons due to the shorter duration of the race.

"It's much shorter so it's hard to pick up the speed over such a short distance,” King said.

"I usually do endurance training for triathlons but with this one there was a lot of short sprinting.”

The youngster has enjoyed previous success on the state and national scene, taking out first in his age group at the second round of the Queensland Triathlon Series in October 2018.

In the QTS Super Spring, he finished the 400m swim, 15km bike ride and 4km run in 43min 1sec, less than a minute behind overall male winner, 18-year-old Luke Harvey.

"I've been doing triathlons for about seven years now,” King said.

"My brother used to be a swimmer and I got asked by an old teacher if we could compete in one of the local tris.

"I ended up doing really well.

"I just love racing and doing it with the people that end up going in.”
