Comfort Kitchen feeds the hungry in Hervey Bay
MORE than 3500 disadvantaged people have received meals through a Hervey Bay community group in the past year.
On Wednesday, Comfort Kitchen celebrated its one year anniversary of providing dinner for 80-100 people a night at the Hervey Bay Community Centre.
Comfort Kitchen was the idea of Janet Newman, who works at the Community Centre.
Ms Newman and other employees at the centre started providing meals for "people who are doing it tough," and over the course of the year they have been joined by more than 40 volunteers.
She said Comfort Kitchen has grown despite no government funding.
The Fraser Coast community has supported the organisation, with fundraising dinners, barbecues and donations from businesses just a few of the avenues.
Wendy Bennett of Gold Star Events presented Comfort Kitchen with more than $1360 on Wednesday, which evolved from a formal dinner fundraiser she organised at the Hervey Bay Boat Club.
Ms Bennett said she was delighted to help, with her effoorts equating to 450 meals for those who need it.
Comfort Kitchen provides dinner for any one who needs it, from all ages and backgrounds.
