Man pressed knife against stomach of a hotel patron

A 40-YEAR-old Maryborough man will spend time behind bars after pressing a knife into the stomach of a hotel patron and asking: "how would you like this in your guts?"

The Maryborough Magistrates Court heard Andrew Joseph Borg confronted the man at a Tinana pub on the evening of July 5 because he thought he was being laughed at.

Police prosecutor Michael Quirk said Borg pulled out a flick-knife and pressed it into the man's left side.

"He said: 'how would you like this in your guts?'"

The man quickly moved away and Borg left the hotel.

Sgt Quirk said Borg returned to the hotel a short time later and was interviewed by police.

"He believed the man was laughing at him," the prosecutor said.

Defence lawyer Judy Millward told the court Borg had no intention of using the knife.

She said he had been suffering from anxiety and depression after the death of his father and the diagnosis of his mother with terminal cancer.

"He accepts this was quite a scary incident for the complainant," she said.

Borg was sentenced to six months imprisonment for threatening violence and one month for possession of a weapon.

He will be due for parole on September 2.
