Kookaburra survives 100km journey stuck in grille of car

ONE tough kookaburra has survived being hit by a truck and travelling 100km stuck in the grille.

WIRES Northern Rivers has reported a recent incident where a motorist was travelling from Woodenbong to Ballina and thought she'd narrowly missed hitting a kookaburra at Old Grevillia.

But when the driver arrived at her destination - one-and-a-half hours and 100km later - she was horrified to find the bird was spread across the grille of her truck.

The kookaburra thankfully had survived the journey and was rushed to Ballina Veterinary Hospital, Muriel Kinson of WIRES Northern Rivers said.

Amazingly the bird was given the all-clear by the vet and after a few days recovering, successfully passed its test flights.

Following those signs of health, the kookaburra was returned to its home territory in Old Grevillia, where it flew away strongly.

Laughing kookaburras mated for life, Ms Kinson said, often staying in family groups with older offspring, as well as both parents sharing care of the young.

So, having now been released back to its home territory, this lucky bird has probably rejoined its family.

Ms Kinson said this story was a reminder to drivers to look at the front of the vehicle as well as the ground when checking if they had hit something.

Or else you just won't know what could be travelling with you.
