Lady Elliot bids for award

ONE of Queensland biggest tourist attractions will be representing the Fraser Coast in the hope of winning a prestigious eco tourism award.

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort will enter the 2012 Queensland Tourism Awards, hoping for a win in the Steve Irwin Award for eco tourism when the winners are announced in November.

The resort's managing director, Peter Gash, said eco tourism had been a focus of the resort since he had taken his position in 2005.

"Our ecotourism initiatives, including the implementation of a solar power station that has reduced fuel burn on the island by over 70% in the past four years, have been very successful," Mr Gash said.

"We decided to enter the Queensland Tourism Awards for the first time this year because we are passionate about inspiring other operators to embrace eco tourism and the benefits it has both on a business and environmental levels."
