Last-start winner Coleborn follows up with perfect score

THE former coach of Mitch Coleborn has predicted a heavenly result for the gifted goofy-footer at Cloudbreak.

The wildcard's hot run continued yesterday when a perfect 10 on his first wave set up a round-one win over world No.1 Adriano De Souza at the ASP's Volcom Fiji Pro.

Scored in spectacular 2-2.5m barrelling conditions, Coleborn's two-wave total of 19.33 out of 20 was the day's best result and followed his win at a Prime event in Brazil last week.

De Souza scored 5.77 and Brazilian countryman Alejo Muniz 6.60.

Fellow Coast pro Julian Wilson faces a sudden-death round-two contest after finishing second in his heat.

It was only last month that ex-national coach Ian Portingale expressed concern over Coleborn's form.

Coast-based Portingale had said his former charge needed a good result to restore his confidence.

"He turned it around in Brazil. It was a huge win for him," Portingale said yesterday.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he goes all the way in this one.

"He loves Cloudbreak."

Coleborn beat 11-time world champion Kelly Slater in round one at Cloudbreak last year and eventually finished 13th.

"I'm feeling in good rhythm and trying to keep momentum going after my win in Brazil," Coleborn said.

"My first wave was a 10 and I don't know what to say. I'm stoked."

Wilson scored 8.50 in his heat, going down to fellow Aussie Kieren Perrow (12.57).
