Late penalty helps Revolution sink Olympic FC

HERVEY Bay's Aaron Cullen gave Wide Bay Revolution's under-18 team its second win in fours weeks after converting a late penalty to down Olympic FC 1-0 at Goodwin Park on Sunday.

The National Premier League clash looked headed for a draw, before Maryborough's Tom Evans was brought down in the box in the 85th minute to earn his team its first penalty kick of the season.

Cullen confidently drilled the spot-kick firmly into the middle of the net to hand his team arguably its biggest scalp of the year.

Coach Andrew Catton was understandably delighted by the result, especially after losing to South West Thunder in similar circumstances last week.

"It was a good win for the team," he said.

"I think it would be better than the (Brisbane) City win (3-2 in round 15) because it was away and because I felt we showed a lot of grit to hang in there and get the win at the death."

With regular goalkeeper David Hillcoat ruled out with illness, Scott Sommer, in just his second U18 match this season, manned the goals magnificently to secure the team its first clean sheet of the campaign.

Fellow U16 players Billy Bayldon and Warrick Stuart also starred in the win.

"We defended well," Catton said.

"Our main goal was to keep the ball in first half, but we didn't keep the ball for extended periods. We were a little careless in possession.

"In the second half we played a lot better and created a few chances and got the penalty which was good."

With a dream run over the final four weeks, Catton hoped they could finish the season strongly.

"We can't take the foot off the pedal, we have to keep the momentum going," he said.

"As long as we keep putting good performances out there the results will continue to come."

Howard's Tegan Cox, meanwhile, scored a double to lift the Revolution's U18 girls' team to an impressive 3-1 victory over the Western Pride in Gympie on Sunday.
