Lawyer and community worker wins champion award

HERVEY Bay lawyer and community worker Larry Bell was presented with a Community Champion Award by the Fraser Coast Regional Council at its meeting on Wednesday.

The council said Mr Bell had been a constant campaigner for the elderly and a part of the team organising the Hervey Bay Seniors Expo since its inception 10 years ago.

He also is the main organiser of a program called Stuff 4 Blokes run through the Hervey Bay Baptist Church at Nikenbah.

The program focuses on providing support to men of all ages.

It includes Friday breakfasts, weekend retreats and volunteering to help rural communities in need. Recently the working bees centred on helping rural communities affected by the floods.

The council said the program was important to the community, especially in overcoming social isolation by getting men out of their homes and tackling depression.

Mr Bell had consistently served his community and continued to invest time and energy into the Stuff 4 Blokes program, the council said.
