Learn about exotic South American orchids at botanic gardens
EXOTIC orchids of South America will take centrestage at the Hervey Bay Orchid House on Tuesday, May 28.
Botanist and local volunteer Corina Harvey will host an information session on Orchids of the Americas from 10am until 11.30am.
Entry is by gold coin donation and includes a free cup of tea or coffee.
Fraser Coast Regional Council horticulturalist Darryl Coombes said he was expecting a large crowd for the event.
"Corina was born in Germany but actually spent a lot of her youth living in Guatemala," he said.
"She has firsthand experience with many plants native to that region and is a wealth of knowledge."
From June through to October, the Orchid House will open on the second Sunday of every month from 10am to 1pm to cope with the increasing number of visitors.
The opening hours are:
Monday to Thursday - 9am-3pm
Friday - 9am-2.30pm
Second Sunday of the month - 10am-1pm
"Our visitor numbers are increasing which is great," Mr Coombes said.
"We have some fantastic facilities at the botanic gardens and it's great to see more and more people enjoying them."
The Hervey Bay Orchid House is on Elizabeth St in Urangan.
