Lightning wins a thriller against Magpies in national league
NETBALL: The Sunshine Coast claimed a thrilling and gutsy victory over glamour side Collingwood in their Super Netball clash on Saturday, to reinforce its title credentials.
Star shooter Caitlin Bassett scored with just three seconds left on the clock to provide her side with a stirring round-five win at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
The Lightning accounted for the star-studded Magpies 51-50 despite losing marquee mid-courter Laura Langman to a suspected finger dislocation early in the second quarter.
It was an impressive showing from the Noeline Taurua-coached side, which moved to second place on the eight-team national league ladder and kept the Magpies at fifth.
"It could have gone either way," Taurua said.
"We won ugly, especially in our attacking end, and there were times we were at sixes and sevens and our timing was all out of whack,"she said.
"But when it counted we kept possession and ball in hand....so that's a positive and we'll take it (the win)."
The coach said her side had learned from its previous outing, a nervy one-point loss to ladder leader Giants.
"It (close matches) is becoming synonymous (with Lightning). I'm really happy we were able to come out on the right side of the ledger this time," she said.
The Lightning led 15-14 at quarter time before losing the experienced Langman, when she damaged her finger reaching out to a ball.
The bone pierced the skin and she went to hospital. But early indications are she may return to action against the Fever in Perth on Friday.
The side slipped to a 29-26 half-time deficit, at one stage trailing by four goals, but produced a comeback in the third term to create a six-point turnaround and a 40-37 lead at the last break.
A thrilling final quarter ensued and the Lightning trailed by two goals with just over a minute remaining.
But Laura Scherian, Stephanie Wood and Bassett came up with crucial plays to seal the win. Most valuable player Bassett snared 38 goals from 42 attempts, while Magpies' Caitlin Thwaites kept up her good form, bagging 42 goals from 45 attempts.
