Little battler Lukus shows plenty of heart
BABY Lukus Clemson was only a week old when his young parents found out he needed open-heart surgery.
"He was breathing really quickly - a lot faster than the other babies," mother Danielle Holman said.
"A heart-echo ultrasound of his heart showed Lukus had a 5mm hole in his heart."
Extreme surgery cut open the newborn's ribcage and allowed surgeons to access his heart and stitch the hole.
Lukus made a full recovery and is now as vibrant and vocal as any of his peers.
"In Australia, there's six babies born every day with a heart defect," Ms Holman said.
The Hervey Bay couple is volunteering their time this month to support the Heartkids Awareness Month campaign.
