A BAND of not-so-scary pirates gathered up all their gold doubloons on Friday - and donated them to help kids who have cancer.

Goodstart Early Learning at Dundowran, Hervey Bay, took part in the third annual Pirate Day Friday, a national fundraiser that is a collaboration between The Adventurers and The Kids' Cancer Project. All money goes towards funding childhood brain cancer research.

Goodstart Dundowran centre director Kristin Peachey said those at the centre were proud to embrace such a cause.

"Children are central to everything we do, so we are very proud to do our bit to help raise money and awareness in our local community in support of childhood brain cancer,” Ms Peachey said.

Many of the children turned up dressed in their pirate best, and families donated a gold coin for the privilege, with many dropping in a coin or two regardless of whether their children were dressed up.

Making pirate hats, eye patches and treasure chests was part of the fun of the day, which also included a treasure hunt in the afternoon.

Last year more than 500 schools and childcare centres across the country took part in the fundraiser.

You can still donate online at www.curekidscancer.org.au/event/piratedayfriday2017.
