LNP pollies go into bat for Newman

SUNSHINE Coast LNP members of State Parliament have backed Campbell Newman's leadership unanimously in the face of harsh criticism from mining magnate Clive Palmer and Nicklin Independent MP Peter Wellington.

About the same time that Mr Wellington rose in Parliament on Wednesday night to attack Mr Newman's leadership and call for Lawrence Springborg to take his place, Mr Palmer declared on ABC-TV's Lateline program that the new Premier may not survive in the role past Christmas.

The billionaire yesterday tempered his criticism of the man while maintaining his attack on his policies.

But Mr Wellington continued his assault, saying Mr Newman had lied to Queenslanders and lacked the capacity to lead.

The Sunshine Coast's five LNP ministers threw their support firmly behind their leader, dismissing the criticism as irrelevant.

However, Mr Wellington predicted pressure would continue to mount, saying Labor federally would be celebrating because of the ammunition Mr Newman was providing it for the next federal election.

"Labor will be toasting him continuing as Premier," he said.

"It gives them the ammunition they need leading to the federal election that must come next year.

"He's off on a different planet.

"He shows no sign of comprehending that the rallies yesterday were not just a union stunt.

"These are people who have worked hard. They are good, hard-working Queenslanders, many who have never been involved in a rally before.

"They have been quietly doing a job, doing what they were paid to do, not wasting time like he suggests. Campbell Newman lied to Queenslanders. He travelled to the Sunshine Coast and gave commitments to the public service.

"He lied. No ifs or buts. And he thinks he can get away with it.

"He shows no sign of compassion.

"He's an arrogant so-and-so."

Mr Wellington said he believed Mr Newman had lied during the election campaign.

He said it was already time for the LNP to consider a new leader.

"My money is on Lawrence Springborg," he said of the LNP's best choice of a replacement.

"Campbell Newman doesn't have what it takes to lead.

"He doesn't have what Queenslanders want or expect. He has skills but no dignity, humility or compassion.

"If the LNP thinks it will have any prospects of winning the next election, it will move him on."
