Rocky punter takes out whopping $1.6m Keno win

ROCKHAMPTON'S newest millionaire says his partner of 20 years didn't believe him when he told her he'd just won $1.6 million playing Keno.

"It took me a while to convince her…she didn't believe me until she read a snippet in the paper," he said yesterday.

The man, who preferred not to be identified, was at the CQ Leagues Club on Monday night and was so engrossed in the football, he almost didn't see his numbers come up.

It took a few minutes for those in the bar and management to realise that, indeed, one of the club's popular regulars had just won a massive $1,639,409.

He is currently on long service leave from his public service job.

He won't be going back.

He said he and his partner planned to continue to live a simple life but wanted to travel to Europe.

"You have your dreams of being a millionaire but we have no intentions of lashing out," he said.

Instead the couple plans to help their families buy a home, make some simple investments and become further involved in volunteer work.

Bar attendant Nadine Henderson sold the winning ticket and said it couldn't have happened to a more deserving winner.

"His initial reaction was very calm…trying to work out if he'd actually won," she said.

"He's one of our regulars, so it's great that he won."

Keno Queensland sales manager Brian Laws said he was thrilled a third Queenslander had joined Keno's millionaire club.

The winner had been playing Keno for 10 years.

What are the odds?

  • Keno is a game of chance and the odds are constant.
  • The odds of hitting one number on a single ticket are 3 to one.
  • The odds of hitting two numbers are 15.63 to one.
  • But the chances of picking 10 out of 10 are 8,911,702 to one.
