The Logies, 'television’s most farcical night of nights'

HOLD onto your hats Australia, we are just 21 days away from television's most farcical night of nights.

Farcical? Sure!

Long regarded by weary cynics as a tacky promotion for TV Week magazine and Channel Nine thanks to the Bauer Media Group connection, the Logies strikes me as Jay Gatsby in 2014 clothing.

And let's not forget the bourbon-soaked reputation people like Sam Newman, Brendon Fevola and Karl Stefanovic have given the event in recent years.

All dressed up in fine silk and sequins, living the high life on the surface, but in fact completely delusional.

Sipping bulk-buy bubbles from Yellowglen while laughing hysterically as network boardroom tables across the nation splinter under the hammer-weight of angry board members slamming ratings-desperate fists into the lacquered teak.

What does it really mean to win a Logie? I would ask all the previous winners of most popular new talent, but I have no recollection of their names.

The Logies are like an in-joke for people in the industry - they're laughing with each other, while we on the outside laugh at them.

And let's not forget the bourbon-soaked reputation people like Sam Newman, Brendon Fevola and Karl Stefanovic have given the event in recent years.

How can we respect an awards night that is seen by industry as an excuse for a piss-up and a party?

I like a bit of good fun as much as the next person, but are we meant to be taking it seriously or not?

The awards are split into most popular (voted by the public online) and most outstanding (voted by peers).

Kylie Minogue will perform and present the gold Logie, this year going to one of this bunch: Andy Lee, Asher Keddie, Carrie Bickmore, Essie Davis, Scott Cam and Stephen Peacocke.

And I bet Essie Davis never expected to see her name in the same sentence as Scott Cam.

And I bet there will be no promo-hype mention of the fact that Kylie is one of the judges on the next season of The Voice.

Only one of those previous two sentences is correct.

The Logies will air on Nine, funnily enough, on April 27.
