Scarness public loo causes ‘eww’ for tourist
A TOURIST who visited Hervey Bay last week has slammed the Fraser Coast Regional Council for the "disgusting state" of the public toilet block on the Scarness foreshore.
Bundaberg resident Ian Gregory said there was no running water and the toilets were blocked.
"We couldn't find any running water anywhere and the state of the toilets were disgusting."
Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell said the water was turned off to the toilet block by an outside contractor.
"Staff are still trying to determine why the water was turned off," he said.
"As soon as we were alerted steps were taken to turn the water back on and clean the toilet block.
"The toilets in our parks are very important to us which is why council allocated $251,000 towards cleaning and maintenance in this year's budget," he said.
"There are more than 80 toilet blocks spread across the region and most are cleaned every day, and sometimes twice a day in the peak holiday periods."
The Scarness toilet block was refurbished as part of the park upgrades in the 2011-12 financial year.
"On the Esplanade where this toilet block is located, a team can respond within five to 10 minutes (if a problem is found)," Cr O'Connell said.
Mr Gregory said overall he enjoyed Hervey Bay.
