Lover's highflying proposal soars over Mooloolaba

GUS Gilbert does not claim to be a romantic. In fact the last time he bought his girlfriend Alina Milne flowers, she was so taken aback she responded, "what have you done wrong?''

However Mr Gilbert set a lofty bar for the rest of their lives yesterday when he staged a showy proposal at Point Cartwright.

Five months of planning came to fruition as he got down on bended knee and a plane flew past trailing a banner asking his high school sweetheart for her hand in marriage.

"I thought about a fancy restaurant and Alina and I are just not fancy people," Mr Gilbert said.

"I got on to the topic and someone suggested a plane. It was loud and for everyone to see. And I didn't have to do anything."

Mr Gilbert said he was surprised things unfolded so smoothly.

After buying the ring five months ago, he hired Gold Coast-based company Sky Ads Aerial Advertising to put together the banner and fly it past at exactly the right time.

He took the day off work, going to the trouble of leaving the house at his usual time of 5.30am and hiding out until Ms Milne had left.

Yesterday was Ms Milne's birthday and Mr Gilbert lured her to Point Cartwright with the promise of a picnic lunch - he even okayed the ruse with her boss.

He also organised for their seven-year-old son William, who was being cared for by his grandmother, to be there to share the moment.
